Should You Attend the FLOAT Balloon Convention?

If you’re a balloon pro debating whether a big convention is worth it, let me pull back the curtain on the FLOAT balloon convention—the industry’s classic, multi-track decor convention that’s helped me level up again and again.

Price Tag, FOMO, and “Will I Fit In?”

Travel, hotel, registration, time away from your business (and maybe family)… conventions add up. And once you get there, a common stress kicks in: Which class should I pick? What if I choose wrong? Will I know anyone? I remember walking into my first FLOAT as a shy newcomer—hundreds of creators, multiple sessions running at once—and feeling totally overwhelmed.

Choice, Community, and Creative Fuel

FLOAT is the traditional convention format in the best way: multiple ballrooms of classes, a bustling showroom, and competitions that spark fresh ideas. You’ll see everything from sellable classic decor (arches, columns) to advanced techniques like distortion and twisting—plus business topics. So, you can custom-build your week around the skills (and systems) you actually need. And the community vibe is real; many attendees come back year after year to learn and reconnect, which makes it easier to find “your people.”

How to Make FLOAT Work For You

1) Classes you won’t regret missing
Because multiple sessions run simultaneously, FLOAT offers an optional printed notes book with class descriptions, recipes, and formulas. I recommend buying it so you can absorb in the moment instead of frantically note-taking—and still learn from classes you couldn’t attend.

2) Compete to accelerate confidence (and marketing)
Competitions happen before most classes, so you don’t sacrifice learning time. They’re friendly, highly inspiring, and—best of all—give you portfolio photos and a press-worthy story (think: “Local balloon artist wins at international convention”). Even the submission-based FLOATies awards are worth entering; fees support attendee scholarships.

3) Work the showroom like a pro
The expo floor is shopping heaven: manufacturers, distributors, and tool makers are all there. I budget extra for “new toys” because I always find a tool or product that pays for itself back home.

4) Reduce the social overwhelm
Grab a roommate (I’ve met great ones via FLOAT forums). Having a “buddy” turns a giant ballroom into a friendly room—and halves your hotel bill. Also: pack something orange for opening night. You’ll fit right in.

My Bottom Line

If you want variety, inspiration, and community in one trip, FLOAT is absolutely worth considering. Buy the notes, map your must-see classes, enter (or at least study) the competitions, and schedule time on the showroom floor. I’ve attended multiple times, and each year I leave with sharper skills, new friends, and a clearer plan for my business.
